I caught myself on radio last weekend saying the churches should meet and pool their resources to help the poor. Within a minute, a caller rang in to suggest the churches burn the seats that take up so much space and fill up with beds - a spin on Peter Garrett's 'the beds are burning' to the seats are burning!

John Pierce Centre

An appeal for this centre will be held next weekend, 30 November. The apostolate for the Catholic deaf provides religious and pastoral care and social welfare services for the deaf community in Victoria. It provides religious and pastoral care. It provides regular Masses in sign language (Auslan), and caters for hearing-impaired people with visual aides and a hearing loop, and facilitates Masses for deaf people at other centres across the State. The Catholic deaf community also celebrates special feasts of Christmas, Easter and Ephpheta Sunday at Prahran. JPC provides the only specialised sacramental preparation for deaf children and the hearing children of deaf adults, as well as assisting in Baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage preparation and Funerals etc. JPC provides a community centre for social activities and facilitates the operation of a number of deaf organisations. JPC provides for the hearing children of deaf parents and their families who live in a 'dual-culture' between the deaf and hearing worlds,

God and goodness go together, says I. Not so, say many others. They feel out of it at Christmas. The 'festive season', as it's known in many countries, still evokes memories of God and religion. Carols are sung, many about Jesus, son of God, angels and shepherds likely and unlikely messengers of God.
Give me a break, say those many who classify themselves as areligious. This festive season let's practice goodness but without God. Just do it, I say. Don't fall into the same trap as us religious folk. We worship regularly and talk/pray about helping others, even 'walking with' them, but turn those gospel imperatives into fine, seasonal sentiments safely left behind in church and transformed into more acceptable practices like caring for 'kith and kin' not 'Kath and Kim'!

Lil Bracken

During the week we said farewell to Lil Bracken. Lil died last Monday morning after a long illness. Lil was a long-standing member of our Parish. Her children went to Sts Peter & Paul's School. Son Kevin is an active member of our parish. Lil worked at the South Melbourne Market and every market day you would see her and her friend Mavis McCormack heading off to the market. Both were active members of the Catholic Women's Association, prepared the flowers for the high altar and side altars, cleaned the church, supported the Loreto Sisters in the school, worked at the school tuck shop, helped get the yearly fetes together and worked at the Community Chest op shop. Some of you may remember the documentary that was made of them working at the op shop for ABC2. Lil not only cared deeply for her family but also for the people of the neighbourhood: soups, roast lunches and other goodies were distributed daily by her husband Joe. She will be sadly missed by Joe and her family, please remember them all in your prayers and Masses over the coming week.
