Ash Wednesday is this week

Friday, February 20, 2009

A paraliturgy will be held at 7.3O pm on 25 February.

From Fr Bob Maguire - 19 February 2009

Wednesday coming is Ash Wednesday in the Catholic global calendar.
Do we change that, in Victoria, to 1st Wednesday of Lent, to avoid using the word 'ash' and risking alienating Victoria's wider community?
This week's blog includes a poem by a local poet.

From the Archbishop of Melbourne

Sunday, February 15, 2009

We have all been shocked by the devastation and loss of life caused by the bushfires and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the fires and the families, friends and communities of those who have survived.
We all admire the courage and dedication of the employed and volunteer emergency services and welfare workers who have worked so hard to protect their community. While many in the community feel a sense of powerlessness it has been an extraordinary witness to the strength and unity of our community to see how they have responded to the crisis. I am especially grateful to our priests, religious, teachers and staff working in our parishes, schools hospitals, welfare and aged care agencies, who have all responded so magnificently and generously to the crisis.
I note the work of all agencies such as St Vincent de Paul Society, Centacare and Red Cross in providing assistance to those who have been affected by the fires. I also commend the response of the Catholic Education Office in supporting schools and their families.
I have established the Catholic Archbishop's Charitable Fund-Bushfire appeal to raise funds to help victims of the bushfires and am pleased to advise that the Archdiocese is donating $50,000 to the appeal and an additional $50,000 to the appeal being conducted by the Red Cross.
I ask that all parishes conduct an appeal for the Fund on the weekend 14/15 and to this end special appeal envelopes will be distributed to all parishes within the next seven days to facilitate donations to this appeal.
Let us continue to pray for all those who have been affected by this tragedy.
Sincerely in Christ
+ Denis J. Hart
Archbishop of Melbourne
(Our parish has now received the envelopes and will hold the appeal next Sunday.)

From Fr Bob Maguire - 12 February 2009

Lots of issues about bushfires down south and floods up north. What it all boils down to eventually, however, is how are we to live together? . . Prayers are good, but remember the warning 'faith without works is dead'. St. Vincent de Paul was even more provocative: 'Money is love'. What the world needs now is that kind of $ove. Read more.

Positions vacant at Sts Peter & Paul's

The pastoral care and hospitality team is looking for some more parishioners to join the team of volunteers. There are opportunities for you to help out in many ways - at the moment there are two main areas of need:
An important part of life for many of our parishioners is getting to Mass each week but many of them no longer drive and need a lift. By adding your name to the pool of drivers, not only will you be helping others but you will also meet some wonderful people.
Sr. Catherine has, until recently, been our sole liaison person for funerals. We need help in this area. We are looking for a group of people to share this role. It involves tasks such as visiting the family and helping with funeral arrangements. Thank you to those who have already offered their help. We do need more volunteers. If you can help, please contact one of our team leaders so they can finalise rosters at their meeting on 17 February.
