We have all been shocked by the devastation and loss of life caused by the bushfires and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the fires and the families, friends and communities of those who have survived.
We all admire the courage and dedication of the employed and volunteer emergency services and welfare workers who have worked so hard to protect their community. While many in the community feel a sense of powerlessness it has been an extraordinary witness to the strength and unity of our community to see how they have responded to the crisis. I am especially grateful to our priests, religious, teachers and staff working in our parishes, schools hospitals, welfare and aged care agencies, who have all responded so magnificently and generously to the crisis.
I note the work of all agencies such as St Vincent de Paul Society, Centacare and Red Cross in providing assistance to those who have been affected by the fires. I also commend the response of the Catholic Education Office in supporting schools and their families.
I have established the Catholic Archbishop's Charitable Fund-Bushfire appeal to raise funds to help victims of the bushfires and am pleased to advise that the Archdiocese is donating $50,000 to the appeal and an additional $50,000 to the appeal being conducted by the Red Cross.
I ask that all parishes conduct an appeal for the Fund on the weekend 14/15 and to this end special appeal envelopes will be distributed to all parishes within the next seven days to facilitate donations to this appeal.
Let us continue to pray for all those who have been affected by this tragedy.
Sincerely in Christ
+ Denis J. Hart
Archbishop of Melbourne
(Our parish has now received the envelopes and will hold the appeal next Sunday.)
