From Fr Bob Maguire - 18 June 2008

With the struggle and strife going on between me and the Diocesan Finance Department over spending too much on the “undeserving” poor, I needed to lighten up for my own sake but, certainly, for lots of others who are my friends either in the flesh or online. So, I’m pinching Father Pat O’Shea’s words on playfulness. They’re in the recent issue of 'Far East'. Bon appétit! Read On.

A statement from the parish finance committee

As you would all be aware we are a small parish, yet we have standard expenses that run to approximate $3,500 per week.
Included in these weekly costs are: staff costs ($1,000); insurance ($450); repairs and maintenance; $400; electricity and gas ($300); office expenses ($300); cleaning ($250); church requisites ($200); all other costs ($600).
Please note that the above expenses do not include 'pastoral expenses' whereby we try to help parishioners and others in need who make their plight known to Fr Bob. The ability to provide pastoral care has been severely limited in recent times as the thanksgiving income alone of $1300 per week is not enough to cover known and fixed operating costs.
We therefore have a weekly operating shortfall of $2,200.
While this situation is expected to rectify itself once we have an income flow from the old school buildings, that income is not expected to occur much before the end of this calendar year. Meanwhile, any help from those who can afford it would be welcome.

Vale John Lenaghan

As most parishioners know, John passed away on 7 June. Sadly we were away at the time and were unable to attend his funeral. In 1976, it was our good fortune to buy a house next door to the Lenaghans and John, Kath, Maggie, Gerda and Nick soon became our friends, and very importantly introduced us to St Peter and Pauls.
With John and Kath, we shared the lives of our children, our extended families and our friends. We also shared celebrations, Christmases, family holidays, support during hard times and a love of music, Irish culture and Peugeots. There were also innumerable meals, bottles of wine of variable quality, hours and hours of late night conversations, humour and discussions on the intricacies of John’s next intended 'letter to the editor'. And of course we shared parish life.
We have missed Kath so much over the past 11 years and are deeply saddened at John’s passing. Our lives have been made immeasurably richer through their presence.
Godspeed, John, on your journey home.

It’s hard to have bright thoughts in this bleak snap of winter. Maybe our minds hibernate even though our bodies battle on to earn a quid. Read the blog.

Thank you Sr Eugenia

This week Sr Eugenia left to live in a Catholic Home in Hawthorn.
Eugenia is an Italian nun from Calabria. She came to Australia 33 years ago to look after her aged and infirm parents. Her Order has since disbanded. She has worked in the parish since then, mainly with Italians, both in South Melbourne and around Victoria. Eugenia has been a real pastoral-care giver, a keen member of the Catholic charismatic movement and, even, a help with shopping for fruit and vegetables at Footscray market.
May Sr Eugenia be blessed in her new home.
