South Melbourne is a dynamic inner urban area that is yet again subject to vast demographic changes. In the early days the city grew from a tent city at the time of the goldrushes, to a settlement of workers' cottages and elegant houses for the rich.
Then came a time of "slum clearance" and public housing development embracing waves of southern European immigrants, which led to its new found chic in the seventies which saw a flurry of renovation and restoration. The area is now seeing a proliferation of apartments housing young professionals and newer immigrants, particularly around the arts and entertainment precinct of Southbank.
An innovative development including a supermarket and other shops, housing and cafes is planned for the old St Kilda railway station site. A huge hotel, theatre and restaurant complex has opened around the vast new Crown Casino.
South Melbourne has been incorporated, with the former municipalities of Port Melbourne and St Kilda, into the new City of Port Phillip Their web pages give information about who lives in the area taken from the last census.
